following reccommendation of coroner's jury he be held for death. - Daniel
Stiles, 52 years old of Center township, near Homer City, was instantly killed
when a Graham-Paige sedan, operated by Frank Popovich, 21, of Blacklick, crashed
head-on into him on the Buffalo-Pittsburgh Highway between Coral and Rugh
Station at 8:30 o'clock on Saturday night. Death resulted from a fractured
skull. According to information obtained in an investigation conducted by a
member of the State Motor Patrol, Mr. Stiles was walking north along the right
side of the highway. When he attempted to cross to the left side of the road he
is alleged to have stepped in the path of Popovich's car, which was also
traveling north. Popovich made a quick left turn to avoid hitting the man, but
on account of the short distance in chich to operate the car, he was
unsuccessful and the machine crashed head-on into Stiles, hurling him to the
right side of the pavement. Popovich stopped his car and he and his companions
went to the assistance of the injured man. When they turned his body over they
found he had been instantly killed. An examination revealed Mr. Stiles' skull
had been fractured, his left leg broken, and he had sustained severe body
contusions. According to statements made by Popovich and his companions, Mr.
Stiles was staggering along the highway ahead of the car. When the car had
approached within a few feet of him, the men claim Stiles staggered in front of
the car and it was impossible to avoid the crash. A coroner's inquest
investigating Mr. Stiles' death was held in the office of S. Ren Pollock,
representative of the Department of Highways in the Municipal building here, at
11:00 o'clock yesterday morning by County Coroner Fred W. St. Clair. After
hearing the testimony of witnesses the coroner's jury recommended that Popovich
be held for action by the March grand jury. Mr. Stiles was a son of Mr. and Mrs.
