Peterson, Joseph

Committed to his final resting place Tuesday afternoon.  A host of relatives and friends were present to pay their last sad tribute to his memory. Joseph Taylor, son of Frank and Isabelle Peterson, who was born in Shawnee, Ohio on March 18, 1916 and after a brief illness departed this life June 9, 1934 aged 18 years, 2 months and 21 days. His entire life was spent in Shawnee and in this community he attended the public schools.  He graduated from the Shawnee High School with the Class of 1934.  He took an active part in school functions, ever willing to do his utmost for this school and his fellow students.  He was especially interested in school athletics, and in this connection cultivated a very wide circle of friends. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, of the Sunday school, the Epworth League and the Young People’s Choir.  For several years past he has been a most faithful and efficient secretary of the Sunday School. God has called and Joe has answered; he has entered into that rest and that peace which this world cannot give, but which comes from a sense of devotion and loyality to Christ and as a reward for work well done.  His memory will be cherished in the hearts of his family and of all who knew him. He was preceded in death by a sister Anna Beatrice.  He leaves to mourn his departure one sister, Rosetta of the home, and two brothers, Edward of the home and Fredrick of Columbus, Ohio, his grandmother, Mrs. Rosetta Gaver of Shawnee and a host of other near relatives and friends. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. J. A. Weed, were held in the M. E. Church Tuesday afternoon and interment made in Shawnee Cemetery.

Pharas, Frances Finsterwald

Frances Finsterwald Pharas was born on March 19, 1854 at Long Run, Athens County, Ohio and departed this life at her home at Carrington, Ohio at the age of 68 years, 10 months and 4 days. She came to McCuneville, Ohio from Athens County from Athens County on April 11, 1872 and was united in marriage with Dr. Thomas C. Pyle on October 8, 1875.  To this union were born one daughter Rhoda Frances who departed this life September 8, 1908. The deceased was united in marriage to Frank Pharas on October 23, 1881 and to this union six children were born, all of whom survive:  Mrs. Laura Blitzoff of Carrington, Ohio; Mrs. Mayme Miskell of Canfield, Ohio; Mrs. Jessie Davis of Columbus, Ohio; Samuel and William of the home and Benjamin Franklin of Winchester, Ky.  She also leaves 19 grandchildren. She converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church of McCuneville.  Upon moving to Dixie community her membership was transferred to that church where it remained.  Her stalwart Christian character can be vouched for by all who knew her and her Christian virtues have been an encouragement to a host of friends who now mourn her loss. She was a devoted wife and mother having always the welfare of her family at heart sharing with them their joys and bearing with them their sorrows. The ambition of her life to her dying hour was that noble quality of character, “service for others”.  Her prayer always seems to have been: “Others, Lord yes others, Let this my motto be, Help me to live for others, That I may live like Thee." Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Phelps assisted by Rev. Weiser were held in the M. E. Church and interment made in the Shawnee Cemetery last Friday afternoon.

Powers, David

The people of the community were shocked Thursday afternoon by the announcement that Mr. David Powers had suffered a stroke of apoplexy.  Death followed about 10 o’clock. The deceased was a son of Patrick and Catherine (O’Brien) Powers.  He was born at Star, Ohio on June 28, 1870, and died at Shawnee, Ohio on May 31, 1934, being at the time of his death age 63 years, 11 months, and 3 days. The family lived in McCuneville for a number of years and about 40 years ago came to Shawnee, where his parents both died. On May 21, 1895, he was united in marriage to Miss Teresa Spires and to them two sons and two daughters were born.  He is survived by his wife and four children, Patrick of Columbus, David of Jacksonville, Mrs. Regina Beck of New Straitsville and Miss Zita of the home, one brother, Patrick of Toledo, Ohio, two sisters, Mrs. Mary O’Reilly of Detroit Mich., and Mrs. Catherine Shields of Zanesville, Ohio. Funeral was held Monday morning from St. Mary’s Church, where a requiem high mass offered up for the happy repose of his soul.  The church was well filled with relatives and friends of various religious faiths who were present to pay their last sad tribute to his memory. We had known David Powers from his early infancy.  He was a good citizen, a model husband, a kind indulgent father, a generous and loyal friend, whose noble qualities of heart won the admiration, love and esteem of all with whom he came in contact.  He did well his part here on earth.  May his reward be great, and may his soul rest in peace.
