The People's
Advocate, February 1, 1929 Martzolff,
Clement Luther Prof. Clement Luther Martzolff,
dean of the department of history of the College of Arts of Ohio University,
Athens, and secretary of the University Alumni Association, died at his home
there Saturday evening at 9 o'clock, after a prolonged illness from Bright's Disease. Prof. Martzolff
was born in Perry County, Nov. 12, 1869. Among the schools at which he had
studied is Capital University, Columbus. He received his degree of bachelor
of pedagogy at Ohio University in 1907, and that of master of pedagogy in
1910. He was awarded the degree of doctor of literature by Wittenburg University in 1920, and was also at one time a
student at Harvard University. Well known as a historian, Prof. Martzolff taught school for many years and was the author
of numerous textbooks on history and pedagogy. He had contributed considerable
to the literature of history and was a recognized authority on the subject in
America. Prof. Martzolff had suffered from Bright's Disease for the past five years. One day during
March of this year he collapsed in his classroom and was taken to his home,
where he was bedfast for some time. During the month of June he undertook to
aid in the campaign for the Ohio University Memorial Fund, which was at that
time inaugurated. This activity was against the advice of his physician, but
his enthusiasm for the progress of the university induced him to undertake
the work as secretary of the alumni association. Prof. C. L. Martzolff was the superintendent of the New Lexington
public schools for a number of years, and won fame and distinction. He was
also a member of the board of school examiners of this county, and the
teachers as well as the people of the county learned of his death with
profound regret. Prof. Martzolff was one of the
sons of Perry County who by his talents and industry in search of knowledge,
made a national reputation for himself and alma mater. His death is sincerely
mourned by all who knew him, but his noble traits of character will long live
