Bash, Virginia Mrs. Jesse Leroy Bash, living in Sulfur Springs Hollow, while walking on the railroad track near Twenty one road crossing Wednesday evening was struck by a train and died at the home to Twible Campbell within a few hours afterwards from injuries sustained. It is said the engine was backing out of the hollow with six cars ahead of it and the women being very deaf failed to hear its approach. It is supposed that the six cars and engine passed over her. The train crew knew nothing about the accident until after arriving at Shawnee. A bread truck driver in passing the scene discovered her and took her to Dr. Miller’s office in Hemlock and it was thought at first that she had sustained only a broken arm, but later it was discovered that there was no hopes for her recovery and she was removed to Mr. Campbell’s home and passed away shortly afterwards. The deceased, whose former name was Mrs. Virginia Dunkle, was united in marriage to Mr. Jesse Leroy Bash by John C. Fleming, J.P. on August 25, 1934. Their household goods were packed and ready to have them moved to another house yesterday. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, and a sister Mrs. Spencer Johnson, who recently moved from the farm of the deceased to Shawnee. Source: The People's Advocate, November 16, 1934 Bates, Mary JaneAnother of Shawnee’s good old pioneers, answered the inevitable summons and passed on to life eternal, Sunday morning. Mrs. Mary Jane Bates, widow of the late Samuel Bates, following a prolonged illness, was called into eternal life Sunday morning at 7:30 o’clock. Death took place at her home on East Walnut Street and was due to ailments incident to her advanced years. The deceased was a daughter of John and Arrena Howell. She was born at Ashland Kentucky, on February 21, 1852 and died at Shawnee, Ohio on June 3, 1934, being at the time of her death age 82 years, 3 months, and 12 days. On April 1, 1868, in the city of her birth, she was united in marriage to Mr. Samuel Bates. To them three sons and three daughters were born and after more then three score years of happy married life, her devoted husband preceded her to the tomb on April 18, 1931. She is survived by her five children: Mrs. Lucy Stiff of Glouster, Ohio; Mrs. Fannie Bird of Shawnee; Mr. Edward Bates of Shawnee; Mr. Charles N. Bates of Columbus and Miss Ethel Bates of the home, eleven grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a wide circle of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Bates was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She fought a good fight, she ran her course, she kept the faith, she lived a good, exemplary Christian life, and by continuously practicing the Golden Rule, won the love and esteem of all with whom she came in contact. With her family she came to Shawnee more then half a century ago and by her passing has gone on to that mysterious bourne to join the many other good old pioneers who have preceded her. A loving and beloved mother who, through all her long journey of life gave generously of her talents and worldly goods to make better the world in which she lived, has finished her earthly labors, which according to Divine promise shall not go unrewarded. While as in a peaceful sleep, her spirit fled to that far a way land where sadness and sorrow are unknown. Her many admirable virtues are worthy of emulation and long will be cherished by those who knew her best and loved her most. Funeral services conducted by Rev. J. A. Weed were held in the M. E. Church Wednesday morning and interment made in New Lexington. Among the out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Jones, Robert Jones and D. T.
