Descendants of Martin Brandt
Generation No. 1
1. MARTIN1 BRANDT was born 17 Mar 1717/18 in Germany, and died 03 Oct 1809 in Pa.. He married (1) ANNA MARGARET KRONER 1744 in Probably in Derry Township, near Hummelstown, Pa.. She was born 08 Jun 1720, and died 13 Apr 1782 in Pa.. He married (2) ESTHER HOLLINGER 17 Dec 1782 in Pa. maybe Brandtsville???. She was born 23 Jun 1737, and died 22 Mar 1822.
Notes for MARTIN BRANDT: Martin Brandt, who is my sixth great grandfather, was born around the Stuggart area in Germany in March, 1718. He was from a large family. He chose to leave his home and family when he was only 20 years old. He arrived on the ship "Loyal Judith" from Rotterdam on September 3, 1742 and was naturalized on April 10, 1755. The captain on the Loyal Judith was James Cowie. The ship left from Rotterdam by way of Cowes, near southern England.
He took out warrants of land first in Warwick Twp. Lancaster County and Dauphin County, Pa. in Derry Township between Hummelstown and Middleton, where he settled. In Notes & Queries by Egle III Series, vol. II page 364, it states that Martin Brandt helped lay out a road in Derry, Paxtang, and Hanover Twp. in November, 1754. It is not known exactly how long he lived there but I would think he left there around 1770 because he built a stone house just southeast of Carlisle, Pa. in 1773 in what is now called Brandtsville, named after this early settler.
He built two homes east of Yellow Breeches Creek on 1,000 acres of land. The creek flows beside and behind the houses. Currently, July, 1999, this is beautiful, rich farm land where many crops are growing including Donald Deckman's nursery. Martin also built at least two barns, one is still standing. The barn on the same property as the homes has been rebuilt upon the same foundation. The original barn is still standing at the corner of York Rd. and Park Place. It is very picturesque. This property is referred to as "The Plantation" in his will.
The first house is stone and although it has three stories, it is a small structure. It is still standing at this writing and appears to be structurally sound although it needs some cosmetic attention. This home was used as a safe house from the Indians who used this land and the Yellow Breeches Creek from time to time each year. The fascinating thing about this home is that it has three levels counting the basement which is somewhat below ground and is divided into three separate rooms. The lowest level of the basement has a spring in it which supplied the water for the family during times when the Indians were near. The wooden pegs where meat was hung to be kept cool can still be seen. There is also a staircase that runs from the top level to the bottom allowing the family to survive for long periods of time without going outside. Indian arrowheads are still found from time to time in the fields by the Deckmans.
The large brick home was built in 1776. Although it is Georgian in design, it has lots of German design included. The walls are at least a foot thick and the staircase is not the winding staircase that is associated with Georgian design, but one that conserves space, typical of German people. The top staircase is built directly over the basement staircase and so forth, the attic staircase. A wooden design in thin panels is used instead of spindles. Some of these panels on the first floor have been replaced but careful attention has been paid in matching the design to the second floor staircase.
There are seven fireplaces in this lovely brick home but not all of them are exposed at this present time. The corner fireplace in the kitchen has been moved to the outside back wall near the rear entrance, allowing a window to be placed on the original wall where the fireplace was located, therefore allowing more light to enter the kitchen. This brick fireplace has been very tastefully done and has an old flintlock riffle hanging on it with a big black copper kettle sitting near by.
Several of the the rooms have the original plank floors and are in excellent condition. Lots of braided rugs and stair runners have been homemade by Mrs. Deckman.
The parlor has a corner fireplace which has had some restoration above it. Again, careful attention has been paid to match this paneling design to the design in the door.
All of the rooms are decorated with beautiful period antiques, none of them being original to the house. The locks and lighting are all reproductions but in keeping with that time period. All of the doors are weighted with a cord and weight that hangs free of the door but is attached at the top. As you exit the door, the weight causes the door to close.
I am told that when you left your home for the day in the 1700's, you didn't lock your door as we do now but rather took off the outside door knob by unscrewing it. The long, thin, doorknob would easily fit in a man's pocket.
The upstairs has four bedrooms, all with the original plank floors and is furnished in beautiful antiques. There is a large beam in the upstairs foyer that is said to have divided the upstairs into two rooms. One side was used to hold church services, probably Baptist because it is documented that Adam Brandt held the first Baptist Communion. The other side was used for sleeping.
The attig can be reached from the foyer of the upstairs. It is shut off by a door and has an " L" shaped staircase, the same as the first level stairs. There is beaded paneling along both sides of the stairs leading to the attig. This paneling is original and is still in excellent condition as is all of the attig. There is a small closet that has German writing inside the door. There is also square nails in the closet for hanging up quest clothing who may have slept there after the church service. Martin married Anna Margaret Kroner and together they reared ten children, seven sons and three daughters. Their ten children were Phillipus, Ludwig, Anna Katherina, Martin, Adam, Johannes, Anna Margaretta, Elisabet, David and Abraham. Their second son, Ludwig, is my 5th great grandfather.
Some of these sons, including Ludwig, fought in the Revolutionary War and were given Bounty Land in Ohio for their pay. Ludwig, Adam, and Abraham moved to Ohio in the late 1700's to claim their land. Ludwig fought in the third Battalion of Cumberland County. Samuel Erwin, Col. and Capt. John Lamb 5th class, August, 1780.
Abraham inherited part of the family farm along with the Brandt Family Cemetery on the farm and the Martin Brandt Bible. However, he sold the farm to Mr. Nisley around 1830 and moved to Ohio. The family Bible is still with his descendants around Dayton, Ohio. It is written in German and has the family genealogy in it. It has been translated to English.
Martin's first wife, Anna Margaret, died on April 13, 1782 and he later married Esther Hollinger, a widow with several children. It was this wife, Esther, that he gave the family Bible, having it bound for Mother, he says.
Martin lived to be 91 years old. He passed away on October 3, 1809 and was buried in the family cemetery on the farm. His body was later moved to Hummelstown Cemetery. His tombstone is written in German and English and his wives are buried beside him. This cemetery is behind the Brethren Methodist Church in Hummelstown, Pa. The Brandt plot is one of the oldest there and is impossible to read unless you sprinkle it with baby powder and then brush off the excess powder.
Through all of this research, I have come to realize what a great man Martin was. Not only was he a Christian but he was a caring man. Had he not written the family history in his Bible, we would not have any of this information available to us today because court house records were not kept that long ago. He tried to have the family cemetery maintained. He must have been very courageous to leave his home in Germany at age 20 and move a continent away, knowing he would never see his family again. Someone instilled good morals in this young man so he must have had good parents. His influence is still felt in the small town of Brandtsville, Pa. named after him. I am proud to be part of this family who helped settle America. He gives me something to live up to.
Further notes should include that a Saw Mill and a Clover Mill built in 1828. The land was first owned by Martin Brandt since 1765. Brandts Station was named after Michael G. Brandt grandson of Martin Brandt - located in Harrisburg & Potomac R. R.
Monroe Twp was formed in 1825 from wester portion of Allen Twp.

Notes for LUDWIG BRANDT: Ludwig Brandt is my fifth great grandfather. This man helped settle Ohio when it was little more than a wilderness. It is documented that there were panthers and wolves in the area and that where the town square now stands was such a thick forest that people lost their direction in it. He was one of the very first settlers in Perry County, Ohio, long before Middleton, as Somerset was first named, was established. Ludwig served in the 3rd Battalion and 4th Company of Cumberland County, Pa. under Colonel Samuel Erwin and Capt. John Lamb. He was 5th Class in the Revoluntary War. Ludwig claimed his Bounty Land for payment for his service in the Revoluntionary War. This land is in Township 16, Range 16, Section 14 and is 160 acres. A copy of this land grant is attached and can be viewed under "scrapbook". A later map shows that his two children, Lewis and his family, and Elizabeth Cain and her husband, John Cain are living on his land. The Brandts were farmers by trade owning cattle and raising crops.
Apparently, Ludwig's daughter, Elizabeth married Jacob Mohler. Their two son's named Jacob and Martin Mohler are listed in Ludwig's will. Jacob Mohler died early and Elizabeth later married John Cain.
Records show that Ludwick paid taxes in Greenfield Twp in 1806 and in Perry County in 1819
