His wife, my great grandmother is the same way. She is listed as Mariah E. Westenbarger and again as Maria Westenberger.

Notes for CORA EDNA BRANDT: They were farmers and had seven children. Cora died of uterian cancer 1 month after giving birth to Marvin and left 6 small children. They were divided up between 6 different families. Esther went to live with an unknown family in Iowa and lived the remainder of her life in Iowa. Daniel says that the children didnot get to see each other often. Daniel and Jay both attend the Brandt family reunion every year and I would imagine that it means a lot to them to connect with the rest of the family.

Cora Edna Brandt Scholl developed cancer of the uterus and died 4-15-23 when their last child, Marvin was 1 month old. About the same time her husband, William Orin Scholl, lost their farm after experiencing financial setbacks due to poor crops and weather.
William was not able to care for and provide for the six children, and the decision was made to have family and friends take care of the children.
Esther went to live with friends outside (south) of Alexandria.
Daniel went to live with friends Charles and Laura Cooperider, SW of Croton, 3 miles.
Helen went to live with Uncle Lenny Weaver, a brother of Wm. Orin's Mother (Elvira Lodusky Weaver). He lived in Iowa. The Weavers's were from England.
Jay stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Oren Mast at a farm outside of Millersport and Pleasantville.
Anna Belle went to live with Mr. Lynn Hartman (Jay's foster mother's family). He died shortly thereafter and she was then raised by Mr. Hartman's adult daughter (Helena Hartman) and his son (Harold Hartman). They lived south of Pleasantville.
Marvin went to live with Aunt Bertha Hardwick in Bremen until nine years old. (She was William Orin's sister). William Orin remarried Helen Root on 3-20-32 and then Marvin went to live with them.
After Cora died and the children went to other homes, William stayed in the general area and worked odd jobs. In the winter he would go to Florida and work in the building trade. His grandson, William Dane (Daniel Brandt's sons) has his old tool chest.

William Orin Scholl served in WW 1. His draft card shows that he enrolled on 9-12-1918.

Notes for JAMES WILLIAM BRANDT: James William Brandt was born October 21, 1881 to Christopher & Mariah Ellen Westenbarger Brandt. He was the second son and the fourth child and of thirteen (13) children.
James left home as a young adult and never returned home again. The last know place he lived was in Earle, Arkansas, however, he collected social security in Louisanna # 436-80-5903.
After visiting Earle, Ar. March 16, 17, 2004 the following information was gathered from interviewing several people in the community.
James was a Justice of the Peace from 1931 through 1934 in Crittenden County, Marion Courthouse, Arkansas.
James & Clara Brookshier were married in 1914 but it is a mystery. right now where they got married. Little is known about Clara like where she was born and where she may have lived before she married James.
James and Clara lived in a big white house near Haefer, Ar. near Big Creek. The house is now gone. James was a share cropper, rented the land. There were several different farms that he rented over the years and sometimes had crops on more than one farm. They owned a 1940 Ford car, a refrigerator and a cook stove among other household items. It appears that they owned several pieces of farm equipment, such as tractors, mules, cows, wagons etc. They also ran a commissary store for the hired help.
Sometime around 1921 J. W. brought home a baby boy who they named Harry Lawrence. There is a lot of questions about Harry's parentage. It was told around that he was adopted and also told that J. W. did not want to keep him but Clara wanted to keep him. (I wish I could talk to Clara). Some say that J. W. is the birth father. We will probably never know but I think Harry has a stricking resemblence to the Brandt family.
Marcia Snyder and I met a lady named Henrietta Dempsey Sanford in the Gibson Bayou Cemetary who said she dated Harry Brandt, son of James when she was 14 & 15. Harry didn't graduate from high school. She referred us to Joyce Griffin Stepp who spent the afternoon and evening helping us find people to visit with concerning James & Harry Brandt. She also sold us a DVD of the church and dinner on the grounds.
Joyce took us to visit Ola Graves in a nursing home in West Memphis. Ola said that James Brandt performed her wedding ceremony to Fred Graves. Upon checking with the courthouse, the document showing James as a Justice of the piece was found.
A further interview with Aneice Jones told us that J. W. was well off financially during the depression when everyone else was poor. The family was always nicely dressed. They lived in a very nice big 2 story home that sat 150 yards back from the road behind the first bridge at Big Creek, near Haefer. She also told us that the son, Harry was wild. That he would be a criminal in todays world. She suggested that we talk to Ruby Clay.
Joyce Stepp, who was with us gave us Ruby Clay's phone no. so we made contact with her on Wed. and had a two hour visit with her. She also said Harry was wild and and that he came back to visit every year. However, he did not stay in contact with his son, Harry Jr.
Harry Jr. lived with the Tacker grandparents after the divorce from Cathryn Tacker until he was 4 or 5. His mother re-married and took him with her to Rockwood, Tn. She married Tommy Roberts. Several more children were born to this union.
James and his wife Clara Brookshier were divorced in January 1941. He married Minnie Myrant of Poplar Bluffs, Mo. in Nov. 1941.
Minnie became ill and passed away early in 1942. The cause of her death is not known at this time. In less than 6 weeks, James was married to Ona Jones who worked for James & Minnie.
James and Ona moved to West Monroe, La. to be near a child of Ona's. However, Ona eventually left James and returned to her home in Illinois.
Harry was able to locate his father in West Monroe, after he was out of the service and it appears that they had a very close relationship according to Harry's wife, Ida. Ida is still living in Texas and has been very helpful in providing some of this information along with several pictures.
James would visit Harry & Ida & their daughter Becky often. He sometimes stayed a couple of weeks at a time. He loved Becky & called her "Honeybunch". Apparently, James loved to fish because he once caught a fish weighing 129 lbs. He made the local newspapers and story has it that it took 3 hours to land it.
James had palsy in his later years and had to eat with a very heavy spoon to help hold it steady per Ida.
James passed away in West Monroe, La. on March 15, 1970 and he is buried there. So, James was already gone by the time I started looking for him. I have spent about 20 years trying to find out what happened to him. I know it was important to Uncle Frank to know what happened to James because told me that he always wanted to know that. Uncle Frank gave me the first picture of James and he also told me that he had received a postcard from him in Earle, Ark. stating that he had married.

Notes for CLARA: This is a second marriage for Clara. She has children by her previous marriage but the names are not known at this time (3-18-04). James and Clara were divorced in March 1941.
Clara was a member of the Holiness Gibson Bayou Church, outside of Earle, Ar. It is unknown where she is buried. She is not buried in that cemetary. It is said that she was a good Christian woman.

Notes for JOHN MASTER BRANDT: John and Josephine were farmers, located between Bremen and Junction City. It was about 300 acres and had many oil wells. I spent many happy hours there as a child.
The farm was owned by a Jim Welch before John & Josephine bought it. Mr. Welch lived with them several years after they bought it.
John & Josephine first lived on the Graffis farm on Graffis Rd. Pursel Ralph Brandt was born there. The moved to their own farm shortly after Pursel's birth and the other 6 children were born on that farm.
Pursel, Betty & Margaret graduated from high school before they had electricity. The electricity was installed in 1938.

Notes for JOSEPHINE SHEUMAKER:
Many happy hours were spent at my Grandparents farm home near Bremen, Ohio. I have very special memories that they helped instill in me as a small child.
The following was read at grandma's funeral: Josephine Sheumake Brandt, daughter of Emanuel and Ruth Ellen Sheumaker, was born in Fairfield County, near West Rushville, Ohio, February 17, 1889. She departed this life January 14, 1978 at the age of 88 years and 11 months. On November 25, 1912, Josephine Sheumaker was united in marriage with John M. Brandt in the Grace Reformed Church, Lancaster, Ohio. To this union were born 2 sons and 5 daughters. Her husband, John and a son, Pursel, preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her departure 1 son, 5 daughters, 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Brandt has been a faithful member of the Jerusalem United Church of Christ for more than 60 years. During her life she has been noted as a hard worker and always a loving mother. Having a large family, her life on the farm was somewhat of an "uphill struggle" and she has surely earned the peace and rest which comes at the end of the road. The memory of Mother Brandt is that which shall ever provide for her children.

Notes for PURSEL RALPH BRANDT: Pursel Ralph Brandt was a farmer by trade, also part-time logger. He graduated from Bremen High School and was the only member of his family to go to Bremen High School. He was allowed to drive there because they offerred a better agricultural program. He was the oldest of 7 children, 5 girls and two boys. He married Freda Arlene Davey on Oct. 7, 1939. He was the father of three girls, Kay, Faye and Martha. His hobbies were hunting, fishing and more hunting and fishing. :) We were the first family to get a television set in our neighborhood so we had lots of company until the newness wore off. He loved to watch the western shows, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers & the Lone Ranger. He would hurry to get his milking done so he could sit down and watch those shows with the family. He and Arlene always planted a big garden every spring and Arlene would "put up" the vegetables. He had lots of friends and it is said that he would give you his shirt right off his back. He was that kind of a guy. He was always fun and full of mischief. Pursel was killed on January 7, 1954 while while jacking up his truck to change the broken axle. He is survived by his three daughters and wife, Arlene. He is buried in Grandview Cemetery, Rt. 37, Bremen, Ohio.
